Title: Bound by Duty
Author: Stormy Smith
My Rating: 3.5/5
Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she’s an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she’s betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn’t even know his name.
Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.
As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?
Reading this book was such a fun ride. There’s a whole lot of mystery, humor, swoon-worthy characters, and you could literally finish this book in one sitting.
We follow our main character Amelia who has been isolated her whole life, meaning she has no friends, barely has a relationship with her father, and also, to put the cherry on top of the cake, doesn’t know how to control this all consuming power she has.
I definitely felt bad for Amelia. She didn’t want this life thrown at her, where she’s quite literally ‘Bound by Duty.’ She has all these obstacles in her path, without really knowing how to overcome them at all.
However, while reading this book, there were some moments where I was so frustrated with Amelia’s character. At times she just made these completely irrational and overall dumb decisions that irked me to no end…but I guess, they were somewhat understandable in a way, given her situation.
I was more annoyed with the whole ‘secrets’ part of this book. Everything was kept hidden from Amelia, which evidently meant it was hidden from the readers as well. I could definitely relate to Amelia this way, because we were both frustrated with the fact that we couldn’t solve the mystery, since we barely knew what the problem was in the first place. But it was definitely entertaining reading the scenes in which Amelia completely blows up, fed up from all the lies.
The romance in this book was a bit insta-love. It actually didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would have, because honestly, these two characters were just so adorable. It really tugs at your heart! ❤
The actual premise of this book was very captivating. I mean, who doesn’t love evil queens trying to ruin everyone’s life?
Who I Would Recommend To:
I’m pointing at all you paranormal romance lovers out there. This book is super quick and enjoyable and has a pretty good romantic kick to it as well.
Also, the side characters in this book, Bethany, Cole, Micah…they were all fantastic and unique in their own way. You’ll definitely love them.
If you loved books like Sweet Evil, Hush Hush, maybe even Obsidian…give this one a try as well. It’s a really good debut novel! 🙂
Thanks for reading! I know that I’ve barely been posting reviews, but I’m finally back in the reading mood so expect more!
